Google, Detroit Diverge on Road Map for Self-driving Cars: ".... The cost to launch a new car model, including costs of developing and tooling, is generally $1 billion to $1.5 billion. For a company starting from scratch, such as Google, that cost would likely be higher, say auto industry experts. Some industry observers have suggested that Google should pair up with Tesla, which is also developing self-driving technology and which shares Google's Silicon Valley mindset. With roughly $60 billion in cash, Google could also acquire a smaller auto company, some speculate, though they note that such a move would involve more ongoing costs, liabilities and cultural challenges then Google may be willing to accept. “Google is the 800-pound gorilla in the room and nobody wants to miss the boat,” said Edwin Olson, assistant professor of computer science at the University of Michigan, who works with Ford on an automated vehicle project. “But at the same time I don't think automakers want Google to be dictating terms if the time comes and Google is the only game in town.”" (read more at link above)

Three Reasons Google Might Be Serious About The Grid: ".... The company employs Arun Majumdar, a former UC Berkeley professor and director of ARPA-E. Majumdar, who heads up the new group, is also world-recognized expert on waste heat, the kind of heat dissipated by servers and storage systems that with the proper technology can be reconverted into marketable energy. Coincidence? (Majumdar also came up with one of my personal favorite energy stats. The world uses about 10 trillion watts of energy a year, but it also burns up 15 trillion watts in to generate those 10 trillion watts.) Last month, the company announced the $1 million Little Box prize for inventors who can develop a smaller inverters. Inverters convert DC power to AC. While power electronics like this are applicable to datacenters, the opportunities may even be greater in rooftop solar, where any financial payoff will be more remote...."

Google, long-term wind contract

Google inks another long-term wind contract - SiliconValley.com: "Google (GOOG) announced Tuesday that it has agreed to purchase the entire output of the 240-megawatt Happy Hereford wind farm outside of Amarillo, Texas. The wind farm, which is expected to start producing energy in late 2014, is being developed by Chermac Energy, a small, Native American-owned company based in Oklahoma. The wind farm will provide electricity to the Southwest Power Pool, the regional grid that powers Google's data center in Oklahoma. The price of the deal was not disclosed. . . . "
